Yep, just had to adjust to this. Works like a charm now. Basically by sharing only one display field between tables you can populate everything else with a related column. Super easy!

Just as an addendum the problem for me is the editable part of the relationship. I have certain setups where I need to be able to edit this relationship from both perspectives.

I agree in that this still is not the same as auto-generating the relation. I agree @GJ_Roelofs with the pain points you raise in the very beginning of this thread.
