Hey everyone!

Some product news to share: we’ve upgraded AI Columns. They’re now powered by the latest, most capable models for a meaningfully better experience.

For anyone who’s run into issues with AI Columns not working as expected without @ references, that’s fixed.

**Here’s what to expect:**

- Plain language prompts - Just describe what you want a column to do, and Coda makes it happen. The AI reads your table structure automatically.

- Faster responses - Requests are now batched, so you get results significantly faster across the board.

- More consistent output - The models are now aware of more of your table at once, so responses are more coherent row to row.

**What you can do with columns**

AI columns are built for scale. A few things you can do in seconds that would otherwise take you an hour:

- Summarize at scale - Condense every row of notes, documents, responses, or records into a short blurb

- Auto-tag and classify - Label hundreds of rows by topic, sentiment, or priority in a single fill

- Surface what matters from free-text fields - Tell AI exactly what to look for to pull specific details out of free-text fields without having to read every row

**Try it today**

The upgrade is automatic. Simply open any table in Coda, add or edit an AI Column, and describe what you want it to do in plain language.

I have 2 cases that have been waiting on AI column improvements for almost 2 years. Let’s see how it will do now… 🙂

I have a question. I have been playing with parsing a text column using AI prompts. When I change the text column i’m parsing (the “input”), the AI columns don’t automatically update. I seem to have to push the little buttons on each cell. I was hoping to be able to automate out some tasks by pasting in a text, or better yet pushing a button (itself probably triggered by an automation).

How do I trigger the AI columns to update by pushing a button?

I thought that maybe [Superhuman Docs formulas, formula library, formula cheat sheet - Superhuman Docs](https://docs.superhuman.com/formulas#RefreshAssistant) would be it, but I have no idea what this formula is supposed to do.

This might help: Have you tried turning off “auto-refresh when references change” in the AI column’s settings? You can then add a “refresh AI column” action to a button. That way, you can paste in new text and trigger the update whenever you want, instead of it happening automatically.

If that doesn’t work, you could also try setting up an automation. Set it to trigger when your input column changes, as long as it’s a basic text edit and not a formula. Then, have the automation push the button for you.

I haven’t tested this, so let me know if the settings look different than you expect. I can look into it more if needed, or someone in the community may have a fix they have deployed.

I really love this feature as it helps me create a calendar based on the event emails I receive!
Love how AI can be mixed with specific column types too! ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/coda1/original/3X/a/b/ab324a0548baf18c8ea5da40084d353dc99a3996.png) 😃

An idea for improvement: adding a “disable if” option to control and limit AI use.
For example, I want AI to detect subject and date only for emails corresponding to some criteria (oui/non column in the picture).
For now AI column applies AI to all rows without distinction.

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/coda1/original/3X/0/d/0d8697e9e1900c0c79f75c23b3cd6bbf0483ab46.png)

The idea comes from the button column which allows it :

</div>

I agree, this is a great idea.
I guess for now, you would have to approximate this by using a helper column that is the column that works on, which is populated (or not) from your existing column based on the oui-non flag column.

</div>

I’ve also been thinking about this. i think i will use a separate helper table to make sure the AI only runs on things I need it to. i often do this, when i have expensive formulas i need to run rarely and are part of a workflow. I add a row to a helper row, with a ref to the db row i’m processing. there’s a button in the helper table that does what tool the helper represents; push it. then delete the helper row.

Thank you for the feedback, Eva (I’m a PM on the AI side)!

We’ll take a look at this suggestion and see how we can implement this disable state for the AI columns.

I’ll keep everyone posted on this thread once we figure out how to do it and update the behavior. The use case is very clear, thank you for sharing!

Hey @Eva-Automation — remember this? It’s live today! 🎉

You asked for a **Disable IF** option on AI Columns so you could control exactly when a column runs, instead of it applying to every row—just like the button column does. It’s now shipped: you can add a Disable IF condition to any AI Column and specify exactly when it should (or shouldn’t) run.

This came straight from your suggestion, so thank you for taking the time to write it up—the example and screenshots made the use case really clear. Exactly the kind of feedback that helps us prioritize what to build next.

Go give it a try, and let us know how it works for you. Keep the ideas coming!

Hi @Ruggy-Joesten

This is a great new upgrade! Thanks to everyone involved!

Would it make sense for Disable If to be able to reference the same AI column?

Here was my case. I have a calculation that can only happen within an AI column, because I want to store a value calculated by a formula, but it will not recalculate on change, and Disable If is supposed to stop the automatic refresh of the AI if it is not empty. The workaround is to add an extra column with a checkbox that calculates whether the AI column is empty or not. This workaround works fairly well, but it slows down the document: during AI recalculation, the checkbox column keeps recalculating too.

In a different case, when I wanted the AI column calculation to stop or disable itself if a value in this helper column was a specific word, it caught the whole workaround in a loop because while the AI column was recalculating, the helper column was also recalculating. So it became a never-ending loop, which I had to stop somehow by deleting the column. It happened only twice with a bit of an (over-)complicated case.

Hey @Ruggy-Joesten

Disable If is the feature I’ve been waiting for to test some cases—most of mine—and I gave a few a try today. However, AI columns still don’t feel completely reliable. I recorded a case that has been behaving differently all day, but the calculation usually gets stuck for some cells and rows at random:

Hi Stefan,

Thank you for the recording. That really helps! I can see in the video that some of the calculations do take a long time to refresh. We’ll look into this and follow up.

There’s also a second case where it appears you’re clicking the disable button. If the end column keeps refreshing, it’s because the AI column is still calculating when you click the toggle. It first finishes what it was already computing, and then the cell becomes disabled.
