Subtasks in Exported PDFs

I’m creating lists that involve sub-tasks. But when I go to export the list, the subtasks do not export. I’ve tried making them all visible, inlcuding comments, etc. when exporting. Nothing seems to have them show up.

Any advice on how to get this to work? Or is it just a bug?

@Shaina_Torgerson

Good question.
In a pinch I’d copy table, paste into google sheets and export from there. Much less elegant, but if it’s urgent…

Agreed that that’s a way to do it, but seems like a bug that it can’t be done within Coda. I’m not looking for an urgent solution, but definitely a long term one for my needs.

welcome to the community! :hugs:

just clarifying if you are using the “Subtasks” feature within the table or if subtasks are with a relational column and from another table?
ive tested the “Subtasks” feature within the table just earlier and it works?

let us know how you go or if you want to share a dummy doc it gives us more context to help you further

cheers!

Hi! Yes, I’m using the Subtasks feature are within the table. And what your screenshot shows is an export of the list in Numbers, not a PDF. I need it to export as a PDF and contain those subtasks. No matter what I do, they do not appear on the exported PDF, only the main parent tasks.

I haven’t heard any fixes for this yet, so wanted to share some screenshots. In Coda, you can see there are parent tasks and sub-tasks. In the PDF view, (exported every way that it allows and it doesn’t matter) the sub-tasks are not visible. The dropdown arrows are, but not any of the tasks.

Hoping someone can help fix this?

The forum only let me put one image per comment, so adding the PDF view here.

Hello @Danielle_Pasternak ,

Can you share how you are exporting? Just the table, the page, or…?
Exporting to CSV, PDF, or…?
The best way to get help is creating and sharing a dummy doc that resembles your main doc. That way the people who want to help you don’t have to guess about what your data looks like and how you have approached this task.
There is almost always a solution - sometimes it requires some extra effort, but if this is something you are using all the time it can be worth the extra effort. For my more demanding tasks, I use the CloudConvertpack, which will let you export just about anything to PDF or another supported format.

i just opened the csv in “Numbers”. it can be opened as google sheets, excel etc as it is a csv that can be downloaded/exported from a table. If you want it in a pdf, you can convert the csv to pdf.

but yes - what you are describing is if you wanted to print the page/canvas with the tables on them then all of the sub items are not collapsed (triangle pointing sideways and not down).
Not sure if coda intended this or its a bug - hopefully a codan can address this @Ruggy-Joesten

apart from the csv to pdf conversion approach mentioned above - you could also take a full screenshot of your web browser and it will show the collapsed sub items (see screenshot example below). this was in a jpeg format, but again, if want pdf, then use external file conversion service.
i know its a pain and not optimum :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

hope this helps!
cheers!

I’m exporting the page as a PDF. And Coda has confirmed that this is a bug. As it’s something that I’ll be using frequently, using a workaround is not a solution I’m looking for.

OK - I understand.

I am using the cloudconvert pack, which offers, among other things, printing your page(s) by programming a button.

It takes some effort to get it running, but it works very well and you have a lot more options than using Coda’s native print/export.

I just tested printing a page with a table with subitems and all the subitems appear on the pdf. Caveat: whether subitems are visible of not, they always print.

If you haven’t used the CloudConvert pack, this might help you getting started: CloudConvert template

The CloudConvert pack is free to use, you get a couple free exports from the CloudConvert people (10 conversions (epxorts) per day), but beyond that, it is extremely affordable: Pricing | CloudConvert

I buy 1K credits at a time (they don’t expire) and for most people that will last for quite a while.

If your tables are really big, or complicated, or if you want more control over showing collapsed and non-collapsed sub items, you can create a singe formula on a page showing exactly what you want - and convert that page to a pdf. That might feel like a work-around (which you say you don’t want), but it’s a one time effort saving you a lot of time in the future.

Joost

Hey all!

Linking up with the team today and will do my darnest to get an answer. Back shortly!

Hey @Danielle_Pasternak,

Just wanted to follow up after checking in with my team on this.

You’re absolutely right that this isn’t ideal, and I hear you that a workaround isn’t the long-term solution you’re looking for. For now, though, here’s the closest option we have while a proper fix is in the works:

  1. Expand all of your subitems in the table before exporting.

  2. Instead of using the Export option, go to Print.

  3. From the print dialog, choose Save as PDF.

The main catch is that the table width can sometimes get cut off, so you may need to resize the columns first. It’s not perfect, but it should get your subtasks to show up.

I’ll update this thread as soon as there’s a fix on the way. Thanks again for your patience here.

Oh, wow – thank you! This does actually work as a temporary fix. The only thing bugging me was the headers/footers that were coming up, but you can remove those via a checkbox in the print dialog too (in case others were feeling the same).

Thank you again!!!
