One feature I would really like to see is optional captions underneath images (and other media embeds). When writing documentation, it is very helpful to add a caption to images to provide some context and to be able to reference them in the text (Ex: “See: Figure 1 (above)”).
Great idea @Donald_Sipe! What I normally do to write captions for an image is just write on the canvas and italicize and change the font color to gray:
Yeah, that’s generally my work-around too. Cheers!
Hey folks . . . new to Coda coming from Notion. I am NOT trying to make these apps identical, but occasionally I run into something that I really do miss from Notion that Coda does not do or I simply don’t know how. I am always open to being educated:)
Soooo, CAPTIONS FOR MEDIA . . . is a Notion feature that I really miss and use often. I understand the manual work-around and “visually” it works. Just not really efficient AND does not “stick” to the media item. I really liked making notations etc. that stayed with my media items.
Looking forward to learning more about this tremendous app and participating in this community. Hope someone has some help for this.
+1 for image captions. We’re moving product manuals from Notion, where every screenshot has a caption like “Registration Form” or “User Settings”.
The italic-gray-text workaround looks fine at first, but as @Mary_Davy mentioned, it doesn’t stay attached to the image. We hit this when we dragged screenshots into a 3-column layout: every image moved, and every caption stayed behind and had to be moved by hand.
It also matters for building docs through the Docs MCP. An image block only takes altText, and alt text isn’t shown on the page, so there’s no way to give an image a visible caption from the MCP either.
A caption that belongs to the image block (shown under it, and moving with it) would solve both.
Welcome to the community, @ems!
If you have a Loom or screenshots showing what happens when you move the images into the three-column layout, please share them here. I’d love to pass your specific use case to our team so we can confirm whether something is broken or not behaving as intended.
One clarification that may help: uploaded images now support native captions. Select the image and choose Edit caption to add visible text underneath it. Unlike a separate italic gray text block, the native caption is part of the image block and is designed to move with it when reorganizing your layout.
There are still two relevant limitations in the workflow you described:
- Captions imported from Notion may come across as separate text rather than native image captions, so they may need to be manually moved into the caption field.
- Docs MCP image blocks currently support
altText, but not a visible caption, so the MCP portion of your request is still a valid gap.
We’re excited to hear how your transition from Notion goes, and we’re always here if you hit other blockers along the way.
