Introducing Subfolders for Team and Enterprise plans

Hi everyone!

We’ve been hearing you ask for better ways to organize your workspace and more flexibility over who can manage it. Today, we’re excited to share that both are here: subfolders are now available for Team and Enterprise plans.

These features solve adjacent problems, but they’re all part of the same underlying story: giving you more control over how your workspace is structured and who can manage it.

Subfolders (Team + Enterprise)

Subfolders let you nest folders inside other folders, giving you more control over how your workspace is organized. Think of it as a long-overdue upgrade to how you structure your work in Docs.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Nothing about your existing setup changes. Your docs, folders, and permissions are exactly as you left them. You don’t need to reorganize anything unless you want to.
  • Permissions inherit by default. New subfolders automatically pick up the same access as their parent folder. There’s no extra setup required.
  • Granular control when you need it. Toggle off “Shared with parent folder” in the Share menu to restrict a subfolder to a smaller group than the parent. Only people explicitly added will have access.
  • Moving subfolders works as you’d expect. If a subfolder inherits permissions and you move it, it picks up the new parent’s permissions. If you’ve set custom permissions, those stay put. Learn more about Subfolders permissions here.

How to create a subfolder:
Open a parent folder → click Create in the upper right → select Create folder → name it → hit Create.

So excited for this…but unfortunately I can’t seem to be able to add subfolders and am on a team account. What am I missing?

You can add subfolders to folders that you manage. Are you trying to add a subfolder to a folder where you only have view access?

No, to one I own. It finally works. I had to access the root folder in a certain way and the “new folder” top right finally showed up.

So next question: there’s no way to multi-select and move a bunch of docs together or drag and drop them into a new subfolder?

Bulk selecting and moving will be the next phase of subfolder work! I don’t have clear timings yet, but we’re in the process of designing and planning.

Would love to hear any other feedback as we continue to improve this feature

Hi @Annabel_Gurney

This is pretty neat update as it definitely helps organising docs.

Immediate feedback is that sharing was a bit confusing this morning. I shared with Coda users, and I didn’t really know if they are on Team or Enterprise plan. I thought they would see the folder. They said they don’t. I couldn’t understand why. It took about 7 emails and finally a phone call to find to figure out what was going on.

Maybe something that indicates if the user is eligible for folder sharing when selecting them, or another indication, would be helpful.
