[UX Enhancement Request] Timeline View: Sticky Horizontal Scrollbar & Canvas Panning

Summary

Navigating across time ranges in Timeline View requires double-scrolling when lists are long (scrolling vertically to reach the bottom horizontal scrollbar, scrolling horizontally, and then scrolling back up). Updating the viewport behavior or enabling canvas panning will significantly improve navigation speed and user experience.

User Story

As a user managing large, active projects with high item counts,

I want to scroll horizontally across the timeline at any vertical position,

So that I don’t lose context or have to constantly scroll down to the bottom of the page just to change my date view.

Current Friction / Problem

  • Hidden Scrollbar: The horizontal scrollbar is anchored to the bottom of the entire container content, rather than the bottom of the user’s viewport.

  • Loss of Context: When a list contains dozens or hundreds of items (extending past the screen height), users must:

    1. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page vertically.

    2. Scroll horizontally to the target date range.

    3. Scroll all the way back up vertically to locate their specific task/project.

Proposed Solutions

  • Option A: Sticky Viewport Scrollbar

    • Anchor the horizontal scrollbar to the bottom of the visible screen (viewport) so it is always accessible regardless of vertical scroll depth.

  • Option B: Click-and-Drag Canvas Panning

    • Allow users to click and drag across empty areas of the timeline canvas (or Shift + Drag / Middle Click) to pan horizontally and vertically freely.

  • (Bonus) Shift + Mouse Wheel Scrolling:

    • Support Shift + Vertical Scroll to trigger horizontal navigation.

Expected ROI & Value

  • Efficiency: Eliminates repetitive 3-step navigation for every timeline inspection.

  • Consistency: Aligns Timeline View with standard industry tools (e.g., Gantt charts, Figma, Miro, and modern board views).

  • High Frequency Impact: Fixes a daily micro-friction point for high-volume users and team leads managing large portfolios.

I’ve been having similar thoughts in my mind for quite some time. And you’ve articulated it perfectly well!

Generally, visualising time in Coda is pretty much a struggle and needs some serious attention.

I hope you don’t mind linking up to this old discussion with some extra features that were requested back in 2023

I would add to the list:

  • zooming in and out
  • vertical timeline

A lot of inspiration from Cambridge Intelligence and their KronoGraph.
