Other than the obvious layout/ui, I am wondering what, if anything, is different about the new table page type? Looks like all of the same functionality that come with tables nested within a typical doc page?
I have tried searching docs/help and not able to find much. The only thing concrete was the short blurb in the email introducing this new feature: “Table pages mean you can go fullscreen and get the real estate you need for those data-heavy workflows.”
I just want to make sure I am not missing out any added stuff.
Thanks for this post @TJ_Beatrice_SCPB. I’ve been quietly speculating whether this was a “gateway” to the new databases capability (I haven’t got access to the databases beta yet so don’t know). I was pondering perhaps to “migrate” information to databases that perhaps one needed to convert something to a table page first? If anyone in this thread can shed light I’d be curious to know.
I really doubt that. Collectively we have millions of pages with tables on. Doubt that Coda would make that a requirement, BUT it is good practice to limit yourself to one table per page, in a separate “technical section”.
Yes, I like the ‘rigour’ that it forces me to keep to one table per page. And only a table, not a view. It was previously so seductive to “just let me quickly add a view of that table underneath it. Anddddd I might just add that view into a collapsible section. And put another view or 3 on the same page”. Yeh, that ends up being confusing.
I have a vague recollection that these database “super tables” have the requirement that they can only exist in Table Pages™. Although this could be just a “hallucination”.
So under that scenario (if correct, which is an important caveat), then to convert a regular table to a database table would require it being converted to a Table Page.
Agreed. One table per page is good discipline. Every document we build we typically have a “Settings” or “Database” page and then put all the tables below it - which we then hide or show depending on how technical the users are!
I think I’ve seen a similar comment elsewhere - but one thing I think that’s missing from these table pages (actually tables in general) is the ability to add a table level description - increasingly important for MCP / AI tools - to ensure a good semantic layer. Coda (sorry, SH Docs) does a great job of this with column descriptions but the table itself I don’t think you can give that additional context. Fingers crossed this is part of the database update… if anyone has any news… am all ears
