Databases beta + roadmap update

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who’s shown interest in Databases, whether you’re currently in our beta or following along for updates on table size and speed. Our early testers have shared invaluable feedback, and Superhuman employees have been using Databases heavily in their own work. Together, we’ve learned how valuable Databases can be in real use.

That testing has also surfaced additional stability, performance, and reliability work. The team is working hard to resolve it so we can bring more of you in. We’re also continuing to improve how Databases integrate with the rest of Superhuman Docs, along with the tooling needed to support existing data and workflows.

Databases are also becoming a foundation for working with agents. We’re building and testing Databases that work well with MCP and agents, so the structured data your team relies on can power AI-assisted workflows too.

We know how central Databases are to the critical work you do, and we hold a very high bar for confidently supporting your data at scale. Rather than open access before the experience meets that bar, we’ll expand in waves as the product is ready.

This reflects our continued commitment to Databases and structured data. We believe they will be an important part of how teams build connected, scalable workflows in Superhuman Docs, and we want a dependable foundation for the important work you plan to build on it.

We recognize that many of you have been waiting and planning around this release, and we appreciate your patience and interest. We’ll share another update as we expand access.

Love to hear an update on Databases… definitely the product I’ve been most excited about aside from Docs. Looking forward to being able to kick the tires

Appreciate the update thank you. Definitely a few things that I’m holding off implementing internally / with clients until this is live.

Thanks for the update! These are some of the features my company needs the most. The 10,000-row database limit is quite restrictive for us, and improvements to cross-doc speed and reliability would make a huge difference.

Can’t wait for these updates

Databases is great. but more than that. I want Superhuman Docs to become a practical Notion alternative for building an affordable, interconnected workspace for education and industrial maintenance (CMMS).

1. Self-Hosting and License-Only Pricing

Allow users to host the entire platform on their own servers and purchase a perpetual software license instead of paying recurring subscriptions. Users should control their infrastructure and data without mandatory cloud-hosting fees or per-user subscription costs.

2. Better Relation Field Selection

When selecting a record from another database through a relation field, provide a searchable pop-up that displays additional attributes from the source database, not just its primary display column.

For example, when selecting a machine, student, or spare part, I want to see its ID, location, category, or status alongside its name.

Allow users to customize which columns appear in the relation-selection pop-up, similar to Notion and Airtable. This would make selecting the correct record easier and reduce data-entry errors.

3. Cute, Customizable Card Views and Powerful Flashcards

Make Card/Gallery Views more visually appealing and interactive, especially for educational workspaces. Visual design and ease of use matter just as much as advanced technology for many users.

  • Pastel colors and cute themes: Allow individual cards to have customizable pastel backgrounds, colors, borders, and styles.

  • Stickers and animations: Support cute stickers, GIFs, animated decorations, and other visual elements to make workspaces feel personal and engaging.

  • Direct card editing: Allow users to edit text, properties, and other content directly from cards without opening each record separately.

  • Built-in flashcard generator: Turn database records into interactive flashcards, with customizable front and back content, flip animations, shuffle, spaced repetition, difficulty ratings, and learning progress tracking.

  • Effective learning methods: Support active recall, spaced repetition, configurable review intervals, and tracking of correct and incorrect answers.

  • Audio playback: Allow audio files to play directly from a card using a compact playback bar, without opening the record or launching another page.

  • Interactive animations: Support card-flipping animations, satisfying visual feedback, and optional animations when answering questions correctly.

  • Custom card layouts: Let users choose which properties, images, audio controls, and other elements appear on each card.

For example, an English vocabulary database should be convertible into a flashcard learning system. A card could display a word, pronunciation audio, an image, and an example sentence, with the translation hidden on the reverse side.

Ideally, users should be able to build a powerful flashcard system simply by configuring their existing database, rather than needing a separate application.

4. Better Android Experience and Direct Camera Access

Enable full document and database editing, reliable synchronization, offline access, and mobile-friendly dashboards.

Most importantly, provide a one-tap option to open the phone’s camera directly from a document or database record instead of forcing users to navigate through the gallery or file manager.

This is essential for building a CMMS using the Android app. Technicians should be able to photograph equipment conditions before and after maintenance, attach images directly to work orders, and associate them with the relevant equipment and maintenance records. Capturing and attaching multiple photos should be quick and convenient in the field.

5. Built-in LMS Capabilities

Support student management, lessons, quizzes, grading, attendance, progress tracking, certificates, gamification, and automated workflows.

My highest priorities are self-hosting with a perpetual license, more informative relation-selection pop-ups, visually customizable Card Views with a built-in flashcard system, and direct camera access on Android. These improvements would make Superhuman Docs useful not only for business databases and industrial maintenance, but also for engaging, personalized learning experiences.

While I think some of your requests are wholly unrealistic, I absolutely do push for a better mobile experience and wish we had a little more insight into how much focus is going into that. I don’t want to muddy this thread with too many personal opinions unrelated to the topic, but it does get very tough to convince people who want an enjoyable Docs experience on their phone to go with it for their solutions.
